How many questions are on the elevator mechanic qualification exam (CCQ)?
The qualification examination for the elevator mechanic trade is administered by the CCQ (Commission de la construction du Québec), not by the RBQ: in this field the Régie du bâtiment only issues contractor licences (sub-categories 14.1 and 14.2). The CCQ's “Elevator Mechanic” information sheet, consulted on October 18, 2026, states that the exam has 61 questions and lasts three hours; each question is worth 1 point and the passing grade is 60%.
Questions cover the three skill sections of that sheet: assembling and installing elevators and freight elevators (45%), assembling, installing, maintaining and repairing escalators and moving sidewalks (15%), and maintaining, repairing and modernizing elevators and freight elevators (40%). No reference document is allowed: the CCQ supplies a pencil, a sheet of paper, a calculator, a ruler and an eraser.
Eligibility is limited to apprentices who have completed their apprenticeship and to people whose documented experience equals the total duration of the trade's apprenticeship. Outside the construction sector covered by the R-20 Act, qualification for the trade instead comes from a MTESS certificate (regulation F-5, r. 1).
