What types of sheet metal are used in tinsmith work?
In tinsmith-sheet metal work, several types of sheet metal are used depending on the application:
Common sheet metals:
- Galvanized steel: The most common. Mild steel coated with zinc (corrosion protection). Thicknesses: 24 to 16 gauge (0.6 mm to 1.6 mm). Used for ventilation ducts, gutters, soffits. Cost: $2 to $5/sq ft
- Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion resistant. Thicknesses: 0.032 in to 0.050 in. Used for roofing, soffits, and fascia. Can be painted. Cost: $3 to $7/sq ft
- Copper: Premium, durable (100+ years). Used for heritage roofs, domes, decorative fascia. Develops natural green patina over time. Cost: $10 to $20/sq ft
- Stainless steel: For corrosive environments (commercial kitchens, laboratories). Thicknesses: 24 to 18 gauge. Cost: $8 to $15/sq ft
Finish: Sheet metal can be pre-painted (standardized colors) or raw (painted on site). Coil coating (oven-baked) offers the best durability.
