What CSA standards apply to welding in Quebec?
Several CSA (Canadian Standards Association) standards govern welding in Quebec. The main ones for a QBQ welder are:
CSA W47.1 — Certification of welding companies:
- Requires welding companies to have an approved quality control program
- Classes: Division 1 (all processes, engineer required) and Division 2 (SMAW/FCAW only, limited procedures)
- A certified welding supervisor must oversee operations
CSA W59 — Welding of steel structures (carbon steel):
- The Canadian equivalent of AWS D1.1, with Canada/Quebec-specific amendments
- Defines weld acceptance criteria, WPS (Pre-qualified Welding Procedures), tolerances
- Requires the company to be certified to CSA W47.1: the certified company qualifies its own welding personnel (the standard does not certify the welder)
CSA W178 — Qualification of inspection personnel:
- Certification of welding inspectors (visual inspectors, CGSB) and testing laboratories
- Inspector levels: Level 1 (assistant), Level 2 (independent), Level 3 (expert)
