How many questions are on the gas technician exam in Quebec?
Gas qualification certificates are not issued by the RBQ: they are issued by the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale, and the exam format depends on the certificate. According to the Québec.ca sheets consulted on October 18, 2026:
- TAG-1, TAG-2, TAG-3N and TAG-3P (gas appliance technique): written multiple-choice exam, 3 hours, 45 to 55 questions, 60% passing grade;
- ITG (gas piping installation): written multiple-choice exam, 3 hours, 30 to 40 questions, 60% passing grade.
No single number therefore sums up "the gas technician exam": the certificate must be specified. Each exam focuses on the certificate's apprenticeship guide, and the Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code (CAN/CSA-B149.1-20) is provided during the exam.
The fee to register for a qualification exam is $136.00, including a retake (ministry fee schedule in force on January 1, 2026; consulted October 18, 2026). The minimum supervised apprenticeship is 1,600 hours for TAG-1 and 800 hours for TAG-2.
