GAZGAZ Gas Technician

How to become a gas technician in Quebec and what is the salary?

There is no “RBQ gas exam” for workers: in Quebec, the gas qualification certificate is issued by the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale and is compulsory to work — “Pour exercer un métier réglementé dans le domaine du gaz, il est obligatoire de détenir un certificat de qualification du ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale” (TAG-1 sheet, Québec.ca, consulted October 18, 2026). The RBQ issues contractor licences: a contractor carrying out construction work must hold one, but that licence does not qualify the worker.

1. Pick the certificate. It depends on the work: TAG-1 (appliances over 120 kW), TAG-2 (appliances of 120 kW and less, without work on the supply piping), TAG-3N and TAG-3P (appliances of 120 kW and less with their piping), TAG-4, TERAG (maintenance, only for your own employer) and ITG (gas piping only) (Québec.ca sheets, consulted October 18, 2026).

2. Train. The vocational training program for this field is AVS 5172 — Réparation d'appareils au gaz naturel: 600 hours, 40 credits, open to holders of a DVS in refrigeration, plumbing and heating, stationary machine mechanics, maintenance electricity or household appliance repair (Inforoute FPT, consulted October 18, 2026).

3. Complete the apprenticeship. The minimum duration published by the ministry is 1,600 hours for TAG-1, 800 hours for TAG-2 and 320 hours for ITG, served “sous la supervision d'une travailleuse ou d'un travailleur certifié (compagne ou compagnon)” — under the supervision of a certified worker (TAG-1, TAG-2 and ITG sheets, Québec.ca, consulted October 18, 2026).

4. Pass the qualification exam. Written multiple-choice exam of 3 hours, 45 to 55 questions for TAG-1, TAG-2, TAG-3N and TAG-3P and 30 to 40 questions for ITG, with a 60% passing grade (same sheets). The registration fee is $136.00 per exam, including a retake (ministry fee schedule in force on January 1, 2026; consulted October 18, 2026).

For a plumber adding gas competency: the piping-only route is the ITG certificate — 320 hours of minimum apprenticeship and a 30 to 40 question exam (ITG sheet, consulted October 18, 2026); a DVS in plumbing and heating is also one of the AVS 5172 prerequisites.

Salary. According to Job Bank, the median hourly wage for a gas fitter (NOC 72302) in Quebec is $34.80, with a range of $25.24 to $46.15 (Job Bank, wages updated November 19, 2025; consulted October 18, 2026).
