How to prepare for the QBQ practical welding exam?
The QBQ practical exam is demanding. Here are tips to maximize your chances of success:
Technical preparation:
- Practise in the positions and on the thicknesses the body or employer assesses: those are what the test uses
- Master E7018 electrodes: short arc technique, straight bead, clean strike
- Train on plates prepared like the test plates (thickness and bevel), with the joint preparation the WPS specifies
- Learn to read your weld pool — it's more reliable than counting amps
Exam day:
- Arrive with your own equipment: helmet, gloves, jacket, grinder, safety glasses
- Inspect the plates before starting: alignment, root gap (the one the joint preparation specifies), cleanliness
- Make quality tacks — a plate that moves during the root pass = likely failure
- Clean every pass with a hammer and wire brush (slag = porosity on the next pass)
Most frequent grounds for rejection:
- lack of fusion at the root (unpenetrated root)
- undercut
- excessive or aligned porosity
- crack in the weld or HAZ
The thresholds applied to each defect are those of the body running the test or of the project code: the platform does not publish them.
