What is the difference between NM-B, AC90, and TECK90 cables?

Here are the differences between these three cable types commonly used in Quebec:

  • NM-B (Non-Metallic): PVC-sheathed cable, dry indoor use only. Not allowed in garages, unfinished basements, or buildings over 3 stories. Sizes: 14 AWG to 6 AWG.
  • AC90 (Armoured Cable): Aluminum armoured cable, dry/damp indoor use. Resistant to light impacts. Widely used in commercial buildings. Sizes: 14 AWG to 4 AWG.
  • TECK90: Steel armoured cable with waterproof PVC jacket. Indoor and outdoor use, direct burial, wet, corrosive environments. The most versatile and durable. Sizes: 14 AWG to 1000 kcmil.

On the CMEQ exam, you'll need to choose the right cable for the application and environment. TECK90 is systematically required for outdoor installations per the Code.
