Is a floor drain required in a basement in Quebec?
According to the Quebec Construction Code, a floor drain in a basement is not systematically mandatory in a residence, but it is strongly recommended:
Requirements:
- Buildings with a water heater or boiler in the basement: a floor drain is strongly recommended, and may be required by insurers
- Buildings with a sprinkler system: floor drain required
- Commercial/industrial spaces: often mandatory depending on use
- Finished basement with bathroom or laundry room: floor drain required in the laundry area
Floor drain characteristics:
- Diameter: 4 in (102 mm) for standard floor drains
- Trap: Must have an accessible P-trap. The trap can dry out over time — plan a water supply tap nearby
- Grate: Steel or cast iron, must be flush with the finished concrete surface
Alternative: A floor drain with built-in check valve prevents sewer backups during heavy rain. Cost: $75 to $150 for the drain itself.
