What are the gas standards in Quebec (CSA B149)?

In Quebec, gas installations are governed by the CSA B149.1 standard (Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code):

Key points of the standard:

  • Gas installation must be carried out by a company holding an RBQ contractor licence covering gas work (notably 15.2, natural gas burner systems, or 15.6, propane) and by workers holding the gas piping installation qualification certificate (ITG), which is complementary to the CCQ competency certificate or to the plumbing or heating qualification certificate. For subcategories 15.1 to 15.5, contractor qualification is handled by the CMMTQ
  • Pipes: Schedule 40 steel (threaded) or CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing). CSST costs about $2/ft compared to $5/ft for threaded steel
  • CSST must be bonded with a #6 AWG copper conductor to prevent lightning puncture
  • Pressure: 7 to 11 inches of water column (WC) for residential natural gas

Purging and testing:

  • Pressure test: 15 PSI for at least 15 minutes for new installations
  • Purging (removing air from pipes) must be done outdoors, never indoors
  • A carbon monoxide (CO) detector is mandatory in any room containing a gas appliance (boiler, water heater, range)
