How to connect a gas range to natural gas or propane?
Connecting a gas range must comply with the CSA B149.1 standard (2025 edition, B149.1:25), incorporated by reference into the Quebec Construction Code, Chapter II — Gas:
Connection:
- The connection is made with a corrugated metal connector certified to ANSI Z21.24/CSA 6.10 no longer than 6 ft (2 m) for a range (CSA B149.1:25, cl. 6.21.3 a)). It must not pass through a wall, floor, ceiling or partition, must be protected from damage and must connect to rigid piping located in the same area as the appliance (cl. 6.21.2)
- The connector must be visually inspected at each installation — replace it if there are cracks, deformation or damage, or if the manufacturer indicates a replacement date
- A manual shut-off valve that is readily accessible at all times is mandatory for each appliance: it is installed in the drop or riser, or in the horizontal piping between that drop or riser and the appliance; it may also be installed within a maximum of 50 ft (15 m) of the individual residential appliance it serves, provided it is identified (cl. 6.18.2)
- Threaded connection: use yellow Teflon tape (gas-rated) for threads — white (plumbing) is not approved for gas
Natural gas vs propane:
- The range must be converted if switching from natural gas to propane or vice versa: the conversion kit is supplied by the appliance manufacturer and its price varies with the model
- Natural gas pressure: at most 1.74 kPa (about 7 in WC) delivered by Énergir for a flow of 20 m³/h or less (Énergir, Guide d'intégration du gaz naturel à un bâtiment [Natural Gas Building Integration Guide], June 2024, consulted October 18, 2026)
- Propane pressure: 11 in WC (2.74 kPa) at the regulator outlet (Gastite, Design and Installation Guide [French edition], consulted October 18, 2026)
Important: The connection must be carried out by a company holding an RBQ contractor licence covering subclass 15.2 (natural gas burners) or 15.6 (propane) — RBQ, List of licence subclasses, Schedule II, document 1592, version 2025-10 — and by a worker holding the certificate in gas piping installation (ITG) issued by the Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity under the Regulation respecting certificates of qualification and apprenticeship regarding gas, stationary engines and pressure vessels (chapter F-5, r. 2, updated to July 1, 2026). A leak detection test is mandatory after every service (soap solution or electronic detector).
