What is the standard kitchen sink drain configuration?
The kitchen sink drain in Quebec must comply with Plumbing Code rules:
Configuration:
- Drain diameter: 1 ½ in (38 mm) minimum for a standard sink
- A double basin sink: both drains connect via a T-fitting, with a single P-trap downstream
- Maximum distance between the trap and the drain T: 300 mm (12 in)
- Pipe bends: no tight 90° elbows — use two 45° elbows or a sweep elbow
Accessories:
- Garbage disposal: The disposal connects directly to the sink drain (main basin side). Disposal outlet: standard 1 ½ in
- Dishwasher: The dishwasher drain connects to the sink drain before the trap, via a rubber fitting. A high loop is required — hose secured under the counter at least 750 mm from the floor
Materials: Sink drain pipes are typically black ABS (most common in Quebec), white PVC, or stainless steel for designer sinks. ABS is preferred for its durability and ease of installation.
