What is the difference between PVC and ABS in plumbing?
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) are two types of plastic pipes used in plumbing in Quebec:
PVC:
- Color: White or gray
- Use: Potable water (Schedule 40 PVC), drainage (PVC DWV), irrigation, pools
- Joining: PVC cement (solvent) — requires primer (purple) before cement
- Temperature resistance: Up to 120°F (49°C) for hot water — CPVC (chlorinated) handles 180°F (82°C)
- Advantage: More rigid, better for pressurized water lines
- Cost: $1 to $3/ft depending on diameter
ABS:
- Color: Black
- Use: Drainage, venting, and sewer (DWV only — not for pressurized water)
- Joining: ABS cement (darker solvent, no primer required)
- Temperature resistance: Up to 160°F (71°C)
- Advantage: More impact resistant, better sound insulation
- Cost: $0.80 to $2.50/ft
Important: PVC and ABS cannot be glued directly together. Use a mechanical adapter (transition coupling) when switching from one to the other. The Quebec Plumbing Code accepts both materials for drainage.
