How many questions are on the HVAC certification exam (CMMTQ)?
There is no single "HVAC" exam at the CMMTQ. The Corporation qualifies the guarantors (répondants) in construction work execution of a contractor licence, one subclass at a time: 15.1 forced-air heating systems, 15.4 hydronic heating systems, 15.2 natural gas burners and 15.3 oil burners (licence subclasses page, CMMTQ, consulted October 18, 2026). Air conditioning falls under subclasses 15.9 and 15.10, which are not exclusive to the CMMTQ.
What the CMMTQ publishes for the heating exam ("Exam preparation" page, consulted October 18, 2026): a 3-hour duration, three modules — general knowledge of systems, natural gas and propane, oil — and a 60% passing grade, with each module to be passed at 60% or higher. It publishes no question count.
The only public figure for that count comes from the regulatory impact analysis accompanying the RBQ's draft regulation on contractor qualification (CMMTQ component, August 2025): the heating exam has 40 questions for the heating module, 15 for the oil-burner module and 15 for the natural gas/propane module, i.e. 70 questions; a burner-systems exam (15.2 or 15.3) has 70 questions per specialty.
Exam fees are not published for a first attempt: the CMMTQ 2026 "Droits et frais exigibles" schedule provides $105.27 per exam for a retake and $877.49 per person per field or subclass for another assessment method (consulted October 18, 2026).
