What is the SEER rating and what is the minimum required in Quebec?
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures the energy efficiency of an air conditioner or heat pump in cooling mode. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit.
In Quebec, the minimum required since 2023 is 15 SEER for central air conditioners and heat pumps, in accordance with the Canada Energy Efficiency Regulations. The most efficient units achieve 20 to 25 SEER.
For heating (heat pump), the HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) is used. The minimum required is 8.5 HSPF. A unit with 16 SEER and 9.5 HSPF offers a good cost-effectiveness balance for the Quebec climate. Rénoclimat rebates can reach $1,000 to $3,000 for installing a high-efficiency heat pump.
