CMEQCMEQ Électricien

Which AWG wire size should I choose based on current?

The AWG (American Wire Gauge) size table is essential for every electrician. Here are the most commonly used copper 90°C ratings (Table 2 of the Code):

  • 14 AWG: 15 A (lighting, general receptacles)
  • 12 AWG: 20 A (kitchen receptacles, bathroom)
  • 10 AWG: 30 A (dryer, water heater, air conditioner)
  • 8 AWG: 40 A (range, EV charging station)
  • 6 AWG: 55 A (60 A service entrance, large equipment)
  • 4 AWG: 70 A (sub-panel, fast EV charger)
  • 2 AWG: 95 A (100 A service entrance)
  • 1/0 AWG: 125 A (125 A service entrance)
  • 3/0 AWG: 165 A (200 A service entrance)

Important: These values are for 90°C copper conductors. For aluminum, go up one size (e.g., 2 AWG aluminum = 4 AWG copper). Ambient temperature and the number of conductors in a conduit may require derating (ampacity correction).
