How to install electric radiant floor heating?

Installing electric radiant floor heating must comply with section 62 of the Quebec Construction Code:

  • Voltage: 120 V or 240 V. 240 V systems are more efficient for large areas
  • Breaker: Dedicated, GFCI required (section 62-300). Size based on power: typically 15 A (120 V) or 15-20 A (240 V)
  • Conductor: Shielded heating cable, or CSA-certified heating mat. Branch circuit #14 AWG or #12 AWG
  • Thermostat: A dual-sensing thermostat (air + floor) is recommended. The floor sensor must be embedded in the thin-set mortar between cables

Recommended power:

  • Bathroom: 150 W/m²
  • Kitchen: 120 W/m²
  • Basement: 100 W/m²

Minimum distance: Cables must be at least 50 mm (2 inches) from walls and under fixed furniture (toilet, bathtub), and never under a shower without specific approval.
