How to wire an electric range?

Wiring an electric range in Quebec must comply with the Quebec Construction Code:

  • Voltage: 240 V (split phase). The range uses both phases (L1 and L2) plus neutral and ground
  • Breaker: 40 A minimum, typically 50 A for standard ranges
  • Conductor: #8 AWG copper 90°C for 40 A, #6 AWG for 50 A
  • Receptacle: NEMA 14-50R (4 prongs: 2 phases, neutral, ground). Since the 2015 Code, neutral is required even if the range doesn't need it
  • Distance: The receptacle must be within 1.8 meters of the range, but at least 150 mm from the floor

The range can be hardwired (fixed connection) with an accessible disconnect or via a 14-50R receptacle. The dip switch (power selector) must be configured according to the installed breaker capacity.
