How to ground an electrical panel?
Grounding is governed by section 10 of the Quebec Construction Code. Here are the main rules:
Ground electrode: Two electrodes are required:
- Ground rod: Copper-coated steel rod, 3 meters (10 feet) minimum, driven vertically into the ground
- Foundation loop: Bare #6 AWG or #4 AWG copper conductor, in the foundation
Bonding conductor: A #6 AWG copper conductor must connect the following systems: water entrance, gas entrance (with insulator), metal conduit, and building metal structure. The bonding conductor must be continuous and accessible.
Ground resistance: The electrode resistance must be less than 25 Ω. If it exceeds this, a second electrode is required at least 1.8 meters away.
Panel ground bar: All grounding conductors (green or bare) terminate at the ground bar, separate from the neutral (except at the service entrance).
