What is the electrical wire color code in Quebec?
The conductor color code is defined by section 4-038 of the Quebec Construction Code:
- Black, red, blue: Live conductors (phase). Black for L1, red for L2 in a 240 V single-phase circuit. Blue for the third phase in three-phase
- White or gray: Neutral (identified conductor). Required for all 120 V circuits
- Green or bare: Ground (protective conductor)
- Orange: Phase conductor in a 480/277 V circuit (commercial)
Important rules:
- A white conductor may be used as a phase only if re-identified with black, red, or blue tape at each end
- In NM-B or AC90 cable, white is always the neutral
- For 3-way or 4-way circuits, travellers are generally black and red
- The ground conductor must be continuous — no interruption by a switch or receptacle
