What is the difference between EMT and ENT conduit?
EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing) and ENT (Electrical Non-metallic Tubing) are two types of conduit used in Quebec:
EMT (metallic conduit):
- Material: Galvanized steel (rigid but lightweight)
- Use: Indoor, commercial and residential. Impact resistant
- Standard size: ½ to 4 inches
- Max fill: 40% of total cross-section per Table 9
- Advantage: Superior mechanical protection, serves as a grounding conductor (bonding)
- Disadvantage: Harder to bend, rusts in wet environments without treatment
ENT (non-metallic conduit):
- Material: Flexible corrugated PVC
- Use: Indoor only, typically in residential walls and ceilings
- Standard size: ½ to 2 inches
- Max fill: 35% of inner diameter
- Advantage: Flexible, easy to install, economical ($0.50/ft vs $2/ft for EMT)
- Disadvantage: Cannot be used outdoors or as a grounding path
The choice depends on the environment. EMT is required in parking lots, commercial garages, and impact-prone areas. ENT is widely used in new residential walls.
