What are the electrical requirements for an in-ground pool?

Electrical installations for pools are governed by section 70 of the Quebec Construction Code:

Distance and equipment:

  • GFCI receptacle: one receptacle at least 1 meter from the pool, but within 3 meters
  • Filter pump: must be connected via TECK90 cable or rigid conduit, protected by GFCI. Dedicated breaker sized for the pump's FLA (typically 15 A or 20 A)
  • Pool heat pump: dedicated 30 A to 50 A breaker, visible accessible disconnect
  • Pool lighting: submersible luminaires at 12 V AC/DC only, powered by a certified transformer

Grounding:

  • A ground loop of bare #8 AWG copper must surround the pool at 0.5 meters from the edge, 0.3 meters deep
  • All metal parts (ladder, handrail, pump motor) must be bonded to the ground loop

Permit: Pool installation requires an RBQ permit and mandatory inspection.
