What are the rules for installing an outdoor receptacle?
Outdoor receptacle installation in Quebec is governed by several articles of the Quebec Construction Code:
Number of required receptacles:
- Single-family home: at least 1 receptacle at the front and 1 at the back, installed within 2 meters of the ground
- Balconies, terraces, and patios: 1 receptacle if the area exceeds 2 m²
GFCI protection: All outdoor receptacles must be protected by a Class A GFCI — either an integrated GFCI receptacle or a GFCI breaker at the panel.
Weatherproof enclosure: Outdoor receptacles must be in a weatherproof enclosure with an automatic closing cover, certified for outdoor use (NEMA 3R minimum).
Conductor: Feed with TECK90 or weatherproof conduit, minimum #14 AWG on a 15 A circuit.
Outdoor Christmas lights are allowed without a permit for temporary circuits (< 30 days).
