How do I calculate the electrical load for a single-family home?

Residential load calculation follows Table 11 of the Quebec Construction Code. Here is the standard method:

Step 1: Base calculation: 5,000 W for the first 90 m², plus 1,000 W for each additional 90 m² (or fraction thereof).

Step 2: Add 2,000 W for receptacle circuits (kitchen, dining room, laundry).

Step 3: Add 1,500 W for the water heater, 5,000 W for the range, 3,000 W for the dryer, and the actual load of fixed appliances.

Step 4: Apply the demand factor: 100% of the first 8,000 W, then 40% of the remainder.

Example: 180 m² house with range, dryer, water heater: 8,000 + 5,000 + 3,000 + 1,500 = 17,500 W → 8,000 + (9,500 × 0.4) = 11,800 W at 240 V = 49 A. Minimum service entrance: 60 A.
