What wiring methods are allowed according to section 26 of the Code?
Section 26 of the Quebec Construction Code describes the wiring methods allowed for electrical installations:
- Armoured cable (AC90, ACWU90): Indoor and damp use. ACWU90 can be used outdoors and buried
- Non-metallic cable (NM-B): Dry indoor use only. Not allowed in buildings over 3 stories
- Armoured waterproof cable (TECK90): General use, indoor/outdoor, direct burial, wet. The most versatile
- Metallic conduit (EMT, RMC, IMC): RMC (rigid conduit) is required for installations exposed to impacts
- Non-metallic conduit (PVC, ENT): Rigid PVC is used for burial, ENT inside walls
- Wireway: For long conductor runs, with removable cover
Restrictions: NM-B is not allowed in garages, unfinished basements, or commercial buildings over 3 stories. AC90 is not allowed buried without additional waterproof sheathing. Schedule 80 PVC conduit is required within 600 mm of the ground surface for buried installations.
