What smoke detectors are required and their electrical supply?
In Quebec, smoke detectors are mandatory in all dwellings according to the Quebec Construction Code and the RBQ Safety Code:
Electrical requirements:
- Every smoke detector installed in a new dwelling must be connected to the electrical circuit (120 V) with battery backup
- Detectors must be interconnected: if one detector sounds, all sound
- Power supply: dedicated 15 A circuit maximum, or on a lighting circuit
- Minimum number: 1 per floor, plus 1 in each bedroom and 1 in the hallway leading to bedrooms
Location:
- On the ceiling or on the wall within 30 cm (12 inches) of the ceiling
- In the kitchen: at least 3 meters from cooking appliances to avoid false alarms
- Near stairways (basement, upper floor)
A detector's lifespan is 10 years. Carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are required if the home has a gas appliance or an attached garage.
