How to install a sub-panel?

Installing a sub-panel (secondary distribution panel) is governed by several articles of the Quebec Construction Code:

Installation rules:

  • A sub-panel must be fed by a dedicated breaker in the main panel
  • The feeder conductor must be sized for the sub-panel load, with a minimum of #8 AWG copper for a 40 A sub-panel
  • Maximum distance: no specific limit, but voltage drop must be less than 3%
  • Neutral and ground must be separated in the sub-panel (isolated neutral bar, ground bar bonded to the enclosure)

Common uses:

  • Detached garage (60 A, buried TECK90 cable)
  • Finished basement with several new circuits
  • Workshop with heavy machinery
  • Home extension (addition)

Installation must be done by a CMEQ-certified electrician and an RBQ inspection may be required depending on the municipality.
