How to use Table 9 for conduit fill calculations?

Table 9 of the Quebec Construction Code gives the maximum number of conductors allowed in a conduit, based on conduit type and conductor size.

Principle: The maximum fill is 40% of the conduit's internal cross-section for more than 2 conductors, 31% for 2 conductors, and 53% for a single conductor.

Example:

  • ¾ in EMT conduit with #12 AWG conductors (RW90, copper)
  • According to Table 9, a ¾ in EMT can hold up to 9 #12 AWG conductors
  • So for a 3-wire circuit (L1, L2, N) + 1 ground = 4 conductors → OK
  • If you add a second 3-wire circuit = 8 conductors → still OK

For cables (TECK90, AC90): Table 9A applies. The cable is treated as a single conductor using its actual outer diameter.

CMEQ tip: When the question mentions "three #10 AWG conductors in a ½ in EMT conduit," Table 9 gives 6 conductors max for #10 AWG in ½ in EMT → so 3 is OK. Memorize common values for the exam.
